Film: Addicts Wake – Systemic (community) approach to improvement

Article – Brown County Democrat: ‘Addict’s Wake’ to be shown for free at playhouse this week.  Additional articles at the bcdemocrat.com, keywords: addicts wake.

Interview – YouTube – The Addicts Wake” director Michael Husain and producer Lisa Hall interviewed at SIFF 2022   Three (3) Goals: (1) Create a broader sense of emotional awareness; (2) Reduce the shame and stigma; and (3) Debunk the whole silo mentality.

I enjoyed the film – a well-told story. One of the most common questions asked (and answered) was why God allows bad things to happen.  The story reinforces the combination of secular and non-secular (Christian worldview) approaches.

God gave us choice which includes the choice as to how we respond. In this case, a sudden increase in the deaths of young people from drug overdoses led to a community reaction supported by the families, addicts, schools, media, law enforcement, the faith community, and non-profits including recovery groups. The documentary is receiving local accolades, as well as regional, national and international recognition.

The community response and strategy is what is referred to as a systemic approach which is critical in addressing the immediate crisis. This stage is followed by actions that sustain the change and leads to further improvements with an ideal including a continual reduction of the causes that lead to drug abuse and deaths.

Success leaves clues – the framework for a systemic approach to continuous improvement is included in the methods and tools supported by the Brown County Leader Network. The stakeholder matrix is used to identify all the stakeholders affected by the issue in the near, mid, and long-term, their respective needs and expectations, and the feedback they need (objective and subjective) to assess results.

BCLN – Overview of the concept

Supporting Detail:

People. Note that “stakeholders” would be stratified by time, scope, and action.   This story represents the local/community level and describes the actions that are/were taken.  Stakeholders at the national level direct actions that would include policy and funding. Another level would be state and regional.  All the “stakeholders” represent the “system.”  Systems determine the majority if not all, of the result.

Power. Another distinction among stakeholders is the amount of control or influence (some, little, none) they have regarding an action. For example, at the county level, there is more control at the local level than there would be over national policy and funding. Our senators and congressman (stakeholders) would have more influence on national issues. State senators and representatives have more direct influence at the State and regional levels.

Knowledge. On assessing when changes result in improvement, would require a basic level of numerical literacy including knowledge and understanding of variation. Children can learn the basics fairly quickly – adults a little longer if they are so inclined.  The main page of my personal website includes an overview of the concepts.
